Troop 12 is heading to the slopes! We're heading to Big Bear on Saturday, March 5 for a day of skiing and snowboarding. Scouts who have not yet earned the Snow Sports merit badge will have an opportunity to do so. This year, merit badge courses will be taught by Snow Summit instructors as a part of their merit badge day. Those who have already earned the merit badge are welcome to purchase either a beginner lift ticket or a regular lift ticket and enjoy the day on the mountain. Rental equipment, including skis, boots, poles and helmets; or snowboards, bindings, boots and helmets, is available for rent at the mountain resort.
If you're interested in joining us on this trip, please let Roselle know so we can get your tickets as a part of the special group rate that we receive.
This year, the trip will not involve staying overnight in the Big Bear area. We're going to drive up from San Diego early in the morning, ski until 4pm, and then head back to San Diego. Scouts should be back at the church by 9pm.
Troop 12 will be holding its annual Order of the Arrow (OA) elections during the troop meeting on March 1. The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's National Honor Society and recognizes the best of the best from each troop. To be eligible for election, Scouts must have attained the rank of First Class, and have completed 15 nights of camping, 6 of which must be from summer camp or a similar long-term campout. To get elected, a Scout's name must appear on 50% + 1 of all ballots cast. Each Scout in the troop who is present at the meeting can vote for as many Scouts as they want.
Scouts who are elected to the OA will be called out at the evening campfire at the Camporee on March 19. Membership in the OA is fulfilled by completing an Ordeal weekend.
